Chattogram Press Club and Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) have strongly condemned and protested the attack carried out by a group of miscreants on the daily Chattogram Pratidin office.
They condemned the incident through separate press releases issued by them on Wednesday.
In a statement, Chattogram Press Club President Salahuddin Mohammad Reza and General Secretary Debdulal Bhowmik said that carrying out an attack on the newspaper office is a threat for independent journalism. It is a serious threat to the freedom of the press also. Such attack undermined the dignity of journalism as well.
Condemning the incident, Chittagong Union of Journalists’ (CUJ) President Reaz Haider Chowdhury and General Secretary Sabur Shuvo, in another statement, demanded punitive steps against those found involved in the incident.
They also urged the law enforcement agencies to reveal the identities of the criminals who tried to attack the newspaper office.
If the law enforcers failed to bring them to book, they would go for a tougher movement.
Earlier, a group of people who got down from at least four buses, staged a demonstration and formed a human chain in front of the Daily Chattogram Pratidin office in Jamal Khan area of Chittagong city on Tuesday.
Police stopped them from entering the newspaper office when they tried to enter into it.
