President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial proposal on Tuesday to place Gaza under U.S. authority, while suggesting the resettlement of Palestinians elsewhere.
This came during a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II, who strongly opposed any displacement of Palestinians, reaffirming the Arab position that Gaza should be rebuilt without displacing its population. King Abdullah also offered to help with humanitarian efforts, proposing that Jordan take in 2,000 critically ill Palestinian children.
Trump, who had previously threatened to cut U.S. aid to Jordan, softened his stance, stating that he didn't need to make threats. However, he continued to advocate for U.S. control over Gaza, saying, "We’re going to take it, we’re going to hold it, we’re going to cherish it." While acknowledging the economic pressure Jordan faces, King Abdullah emphasized Jordan's commitment to its own stability and the well-being of its citizens.
Meanwhile, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi voiced support for rebuilding Gaza without displacing Palestinians and announced plans to present a comprehensive reconstruction plan to the U.S. Trump also warned of potential conflict if Hamas does not release all hostages, but he minimized the risk of long-term setbacks in peace efforts with Israel.
