Thirteen policemen, including two sub-inspectors, have been removed from Companiganj Police Station and attached to the district police lines due to allegations of irregularities and corruption.
The action was ordered by Additional Superintendent of Sylhet Police Md Russelur Rahman on Monday, Sylhet Superintendent of Police Mahbubur Rahman confirmed on Tuesday.
Among those removed were two assistant sub-inspectors and nine constables.
Locals had accused some officers of extorting money from stone-laden vehicles at Shah Arefin Tila in Companiganj upazila. Photos and videos of the alleged misconduct went viral on social media, prompting media coverage and public outcry.
The officers in question are sub-inspectors Khokon Chandra Sarkar and Milon Fakir; assistant sub-inspectors Sishir Ahmed Mukul and Shamim Hasan; and constables Nazmul Ahsan, Munna Chowdhury, Naimur Rahman, Tushar Pal, Abu Hanif, Shakhawat Sadi, Sagar Chandra Das, Mehedi Hossain, and Kipesh Chandra Roy.
Superintendent Mahbubur Rahman stated that a formal investigation is underway, and legal action will be taken if the allegations are proven true.
