Choyon Islam, former lawmaker for Sirajganj-6 constituency, has been arrested from Sreepur upazila in Gazipur district early Monday.
Choyon, also the Sirajganj’s Shahjadpur uapzila Awami League president, was arrested from Teperbari village in the upazila around 12:00 AM.
According to locals and police, Choyon was apprehended at the fourth floor of a six-storied building owned by Khairul Islam in the district. He had reportedly been staying there for nearly two months.
A team of Sreepur police laid a siege to the building after being informed by the members of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said Sreepur Police Station officer-in-charge Jaoynal Abedin Mondol.
The police raided the building and arrested Choyon from there, the OC said, adding that further information regarding the arrest would be informed letter.
Gazipur Superintendent of Police Chowdhury Md Zaber Sadeque said that legal action was being taken against Choyon.
Chayon was elected as an MP for the third time in the 12th parliamentary election. After the fall of the Awami League government, he went into hiding. In November, he and four others were named in an extortion case filed in the court.
