A nationwide operation, named Operation Devil Hunt, has resulted in arrest of 1,308 individuals so far.
The operation, which began on the night of Saturday, February 8, and continued into Sunday, has seen arrests made across the country, including in Dhaka.
In a statement on Sunday evening, Inamul Haque Sagar, Additional Inspector General (Media and PR) at the Police Headquarters, confirmed the arrests.
He shared that 1,308 individuals have been apprehended since the operation commenced. Of these, 274 individuals were arrested by Metropolitan Police forces, while the remaining 1,034 were taken into custody by the regional police forces across the country.
The term "Devil Hunt" is derived from the words "Devil" meaning "Satan" and "Hunt" meaning "to hunt." The operation is specifically aimed at bringing anti-state groups, terrorists, and criminals under the law.
Operation Devil Hunt is a special initiative that began on February 8 and is being carried out simultaneously across the country. This operation was launched in response to a terrorist attack on the students and citizens in Gazipur on February 7, allegedly carried out by members of the Awami League. The attack, which led to casualties and worsened the law and order situation, was reportedly led by former autocratic leaders of the Awami League, who had been ousted in a student uprising against their rule.
In the wake of the incident, a meeting was held with senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, law enforcement agencies, and other security organizations. The outcome of the meeting was a decision to bolster the overall security system of the country, leading to the launch of Operation Devil Hunt starting February 8.
