In an interview with the Daily Observer at Charmonai Darbar in Barishal, Chormonai Peer and Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer (IAB) Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim said they had made 10 points ideological agreement with BNP and political agreement with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam and other Islamic political parties. And they have also demanded the next general elections under Proportional Representation (PR) system.

What do you think has changed most significantly in the country's politics after August 5?
IAB Ameer: Those who
have been in politics for 53 years after independence have not made any significant contributions to our country or the people of the country. Because without Islamic governance it is not possible to ensure people's rights.

After August 5, a conducive environment has been created in the country for Islamic politics.

Is it possible to establish Islamic governance within the current state system?

IAB Ameer: Of course, it is possible, Afghanistan has already developed an Islamic system of governance. They have also ensured economic and social development under this system?

The political environment of Bangladesh and Afghanistan are different. In that case, is it possible to apply the political ideology of Afghanistan in Bangladesh?
IAB Ameer: Even though the political environment is different, I am optimistic. Because 92 per cent of the people in this country are Muslims and their main ideology is Islam.

How much contribution do you think Islami Andolan Bangladesh has made in building the political structure of Bangladesh?
IAB Ameer: The Islamic Movement was established in 1987. Since then, no one from our party has been able to be elected as a member of parliament. Different political parties have lured us with various financial and power temptations so far. But we rejected them.

Because we want to change this political system and bring the people of the country under our ideal Islamic governance system. Therefore, the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh is playing an important role establish an ideological Islamic political structure.

So far, you have participated in national and local elections and made political agreements with many political parties. To what extent do you think the big political parties have kept their promises?
IAB Ameer: So far, the political parties have deceived us and used us as a ladder to power. No party has implemented their promises after coming to power.

The fascist Awami League government had promised us that they would not pass any anti-Sharia law. However, they have always run the country to protect the interests of foreign countries. They have never done politics for the welfare of the people of the country and Islam.

You recently held discussions with BNP. What political discussions took place with you in that discussion?
IAB Ameer: No, there was no political agreement between us. We have agreed on 10 ideological decisions. We have presented these decisions to the countrymen through the media.

You have also discussed with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam. Have you reached any political agreement with them?
IAB Ameer: The Ameer of Jamaat came to Barisal for their organizational programme. Since he came there, he has come to Charmonai Darbar to visit my father's grave.

He was a guest, so we have hosted him.

If we can work together, we will be able to serve the people of the country. We have agreed to build a unity of Islamic parties.

We have discussed this issue not only with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami but also with other Islamic parties.
With which other parties have you discussed?
IAB Ameer: We have discussed it with Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh, Nezami Islam, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis and various other Islamic parties.

How effective do you think these political agreements are?
IAB Ameer: If you think like this, you cannot do politics and cannot move forward.

BNP is demanding early elections with minimum reforms. Do you agree with them?
IAB Ameer: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir requested me to demand early elections. But we told him clearly, we promised on the matter that one and a half years should be given to interim government for reforms.

It has already been six months. One more year to go. So it is impossible for us to break our promise now.

Do you think that an alliance of Islamic parties against a party like BNP in Bangladeshi politics will be successful?

IAB Ameer: We have proposed to conduct General Elections in the Proportional Representation (PR) system. Because we have seen before, after coming to power with absolute majority, all the political parties in the country turn into fascists.

If elections are held on a PR basis, no party will be able to turn itself into a fascist government.

Besides, if elections are held using PR system, political parties will nominate qualified people. There will be less use of black money and muscle power. In this way, people with bad character can be kept away from running the country.

Elections are held using the PR system in 91 countries of the world.

The Islamic parties have agreed with us.

How was the experience of participating in the 2018 national elections?
IAB Ameer: In 2018, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina assured us of a fair election. We went to the elections with BNP. But Hasina deceived us and voted during the night.

Was there any pressure from the then Awami League government or did you receive any proposal to participate in the 2024 General Elections?

IAB Ameer: In 2024, they offered us to become an opposition party in parliament. But we did not fall into Hasina's trap one more time.

We want a welfare state. BNP-Jamaat know that our goal is a welfare state, the aspirations of the people of the country will be fulfilled and they will get a taste of real freedom.

The people have also given us unwavering support for this idea of a welfare state.

The leaders of the July-August student-people uprising say that they will not allow Awami League to participate in the elections. What is your party's opinion on this matter?

IAB Ameer: The Awami League has deceived the people and political parties of the country in three elections.

They did not let the people of Bangladesh vote in these elections. That is why I will say that they will not be able to participate in the next three elections.

In the meantime, all their killings, disappearances, torture and looting must be brought to justice. After that the court will decide whether they can or cannot do politics in the country.
