Customs authorities in Dhaka have detained a man and seized 2.1 kg of gold hidden inside a pair of rechargeable lamps at Shahjalal International Airport.

Zakir Hossain, commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, confirmed that the contraband was seized from a passenger named Shojib Hossain - travelling from Kuwait - at the airport around 6am on Saturday.

Shojib landed on a Jazeera Airlines flight (J-9533) from Kuwait during the "D-Shift" of the airport customs.

After finding irregularities, customs officials scanned two rechargeable lamps inside the passenger's baggage multiple times and discovered the hidden gold.

They were then brought to the baggage counter and, in the presence of different agencies, the lamps were broken open and eight bars of gold found inside.

Customs officials say legal action is being taken over the incident.
