The name of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is set to change once more.
On January 8, 2025, students and staff noticed new banners on various blocks of the campus displaying the name "Bangladesh Medical University" (BMU).
The name change was reportedly made by the students of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in collaboration with doctors, officers, and employees of the university.
The new name was seen early in the morning by Dr. Md. Ruhul Kuddus Bipul, the personal secretary of the Vice-Chancellor. He confirmed that the name given by the students, along with other proposals, is under discussion with the Ministry. He stated that an official decision regarding the name change could be made within the next two to three working days.
The institution, originally known as the Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research (PG Hospital), was established in December 1965. After the country gained independence in 1971, the hospital continued to operate under this name.
In 1998, the government of the time transformed the institution into a university, enhancing its facilities for higher medical education and research. The name was officially changed to Bangladesh Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) through a law passed in the National Parliament under the leadership of the Awami League government.
The university's Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Dr. A.K. Azad, mentioned that no final decision on the name change has been made yet. Several names are under consideration, and a final decision will be made after consulting with the students. A new notification regarding the name change is expected soon.
Previously, on the night of February 5, 2024, a group of doctors, officers, and employees working at the university removed the signboards bearing the name of "Bangabandhu" from the institution.
Initially, the sign was taken down from the C Block building, and later from several other locations, removing the reference to the Father of the Nation from the universitys signage.
