Molasses imported from Pakistan for the first time amid Indian duty hike

Bangladesh imported molasses from Pakistan, an affordable option, for the first timeon Thursday due to India�s 50% duty hike a year ago.

Panama-flagged Dolphin-19 freight ship, left the Karachi Port on January 22, reached Mongla Port in the morning with 5,500 tons of sweet product and unloading activities began at the noon.

The molasses would be stored in the port�s united refinery and bulk storage Ltd and transport to Sirajganj�s Baghabari by train from where these will be sent to different distribution centres across the country.

Mongla Port Authority Deputy Director Md Makruzzaman and Member Commodore Shafikul Islam Sarkar were present during the unloading activities to celebrate the first molasses import from Pakistan.

Earlier, the Mongla Port authority starting its inaugural activities from July 28, 2022 through export garments goods and the port marks its first import in December 12, 2023.
