CJ provides overview of judicial system of country to military top brass

Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed on Wednesday delivered a lecture as a resource person at the invitation of the National Defence College, a Supreme Court press release said.

His audience comprised senior Bangladeshi and foreign military officials of the rank of Brigadier General and above, as well as senior civil officials of Joint Secretary rank and above, according to press release issued by the Supreme Court.

In his address, the Chief Justice provided the high-ranking military and civil officials attending the course with an overview of judicial system of Bangladesh. He elaborated on the historical development of law and the judiciary in this region, theoretical and practical aspects of law, the structure and hierarchy of courts in Bangladesh, the role of the judiciary in upholding the rule of law and ensuring good governance, the significance of judicial independence in maintaining national security and stability, and the role of the Supreme Court in promoting social justice through judicial activism.

Additionally, he presented a detailed outline of the Roadmap for judicial reform which he announced upon assuming office as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh. He briefed the participants on the significant progress made in implementing this roadmap within just four months. In particular, he highlighted that the establishment of the Judicial Appointment Council under his leadership has opened the door for merit-based appointments to the Supreme Court, ensuring greater transparency in the appointment of higher court judges. He also emphasized that the Supreme Judicial Council, under his leadership, remains actively engaged in ensuring accountability within the judiciary. Furthermore, he affirmed his commitment to implementing various short, medium, and long-term plans aimed at effective separation of judiciary and better judicial services for the people.
