Women's football match held in Akkelpur upazila

After many incidents, the match of the women's football team finally was held at Tilakpur High School ground of Akkelpur upazila in Joypurhat on Wednesday.

Dhaka district women's football team and Joypurhat district women's football team participated in the match, organized by Akkelpur upazila administration.

Joypurhat deputy commissioner Afroza Akter Chowdhury formally inaugurated the match as the chief guest.

Superintendent of Police Abdul Wahab, BNP Rajshahi Divisional co-organizing secretary Obaidur Rahman Chandan, district BNP convener Golzar Hossain, among others, were present in the opening ceremony.

The match was earlier scheduled to play on January 29 last at Tilakpur High School ground, but local mosque imams, madrasa teachers and students and local leaders and workers of Islamist political parties objected of women's participation in football.

On January 28, they held a rally and announced to stop the women's football game in Tilakpur. After this announcement, they attacked the football field and vandalized the fence along with the local madrasah students.

The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs formed a three-member investigation committee to look into the matter when the matter was publicized in various media.

Later, the opponents of the football game admitted their mistakes and apologized, in the public hearing organized by the upazila administration held at the Akkelpur Upazila Parishad Auditorium on Saturday (Jan 31) last.

In view of after ensuring the safety of the women, the game was organized today by local club Akkelpur upazila administration. �BSS
