The Local Government Division (LGD) under the Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Ministry is likely to appoint an administrator for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) from the private sector.
Mohammad Azaz, Chairman of the River and Delta Resources of Dhaka's Sher-e-Banglanagar, would be appointed as the new administrator of the north city of Dhaka.
He would be appointed in accordance with the existing Local Government (City Corporation) Ordinance, 2024 replacing its incumbent administrator Mahmudul Hasan, also an additional secretary to the government.
This was learnt from a demi-official (DO) letter of LGRD Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, which was sent to the Senior Secretary to the Public Administration Ministry recently, for appointing him in the position on two years' contract. The letter was made viral in different social media.
However, the PA Ministry has not taken any measures yet as the ministry can appoint administrator only from the public servants. As per the law, the LGD has the authority to appoint anyone as administrator.
When contacted, LGRD Adviser's Assistant Private Secretary Moajjam Hossain, also one of the coordinators of July-August Uprising, told this correspondent that the adviser had sent the letter to the PA Ministry for appointment. But, the PA Ministry stated that the LGD itself can appoint a private qualified person as administrator. There will be no need to issue a contractual appointment for an administrator.
In the letter, the adviser mentioned Mohammad Azaz as efficient and expert person. Due to his engagement various important works, his appointment as an administrator of DNCC will glorify the image of the city corporation.
Besides, there is no administrator in the Dhaka South City Corporations since last December, 2024.
