The students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) in a press conference addressed a four-point demand to the administration on Tuesday.
The press conference was held under the banner of ‘Justice for Kutetians’ at Student Welfare Centre in the university.
Recently,10 activists of the KUET Chhatra League were permanently expelled from the campus as it was proved that they were involved in torturing a student named Zahidur Rahman.
The four points demand are:
1. Every individuals, including teachers and staffs, who were involved in torturing Zahidur, must be brought to justice.
2. Apart from Zahidur, all complaints relating to torturing must be properly investigated and involved individuals must be punished by February 20, 2025.
3. The university authorities must have to give compensation to Zahidur.
4. The university must provide legal and logistical support for the cases and must provide written assurances of this.
Earlier, Zahidur Rahman, a second-year student of the CSE department of KUET at that time, was picked up and assaulted the entire night by BCL activists on September 11, 2022 over alleged anti-government chatting.
Later, he was shown arrested and sent to jail under DSA act case filed by KUET's Security Officer Sadeque Hossain Pramanik with Khanjahan Ali Police Station.
Zahid was under treatment for a few months into a prison cell of Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Following the ouster of the Awami League regime on 5 August 2024, Zahidur appealed to the KUET vice-chancellor seeking justice for the torture. Based on the appeal, the university formed a probe body on September 17 to investigate the matter.
