Starting Thursday, buses from 21 companies in Dhaka will implement a counter-based ticketing system to help alleviate traffic congestion in the city. The service, which will officially begin at 10:30 am on February 6, aims to streamline bus operations and improve commuter experiences.
The information was provided by Md Saiful Alam, general secretary of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association (DRTOA), in a press conference held at Paribagh in the capital on Tuesday. The press conference was organized by bus owners to discuss the initiative for implementing counter-based bus services on multiple routes in Dhaka.
During his speech, Saiful Alam said that around 2,610 pink-colored buses will operate under this new system.
Earlier, it was decided that transport owners would shift from trip-based agreements with drivers to weekly or monthly contracts to ease this transition during a meeting held on December 19 at the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry.
Saiful Alam explained that buses running on routes such as Mirpur, Gabtali, and Mohammadpur will adopt the counter-based system within this month. Under this system, buses will only pick up and drop off passengers at designated stops and passengers must purchase tickets from counters before boarding the buses.
This transition will help to reduce and congestion, and improve overall service quality for commuters in Dhaka.
The bus owners association expressed optimism about the service.
