KHULNA, Feb 3: The Ekushey Book Fair-2025 in Khulna has officially commenced, marking a significant cultural event for book enthusiasts in the region.

The month-long fair, which began on a Saturday evening on the Government Public Library premises at Boyra, was inaugurated by Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Firoz Sarkar.

In his inaugural speech, Sarkar emphasised the irreplaceable value of books, stating that a book is a loyal companion and that a true book lover is akin to a book itself.

He highlighted the importance of finding the right book among the vast array available, noting that while technology has made many tasks easier, the experience of reading a printed book is far superior to that of a digital one.

He also praised the Khulna Book Fair, describing it as one of the most notable book fairs in the country, second only to the Dhaka book fair, and expressed hope that it would fulfil the dreams of book lovers.

The event was chaired by DC Mohammad Saiful Islam, with Md Saidur Rahman, Director General of the Directorate of Social Welfare, delivering the welcome speech.

Special guests included Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Zulfiqar Ali Haider and the Principal of Government B L College, Sheikh Humayun Kabir.

The fair is jointly organized by the Government Divisional Public Library and the Khulna District Administration, with Principal Librarian-cum-Deputy Director Mohammad Hamidur Rahman overseeing the proceedings.

The fair will be open daily from 4 pm to 9 pm, except on holidays, when it will start at 11 am and continue until 9 pm throughout February.

A wide range of organizations including government and non-government literary groups, publishers, and booksellers from various districts, have set up stalls at the fair.

In addition to book sales, the fair will feature daily events such as discussions, seminars, new book unveilings, recitations, cultural programmes, and various competitions, including quizzes for children.

This event not only celebrates literature but also fosters a sense of community among readers and writers, making it a cornerstone of cultural enrichment in Khulna.
