An eighth-grade student from a school in the capital's Dakshinkhan area, was allegedly raped, murdered, and her body dumped in Hatirjheel.
The gruesome incident came to light after two suspects, Robin and Rabbi Mridha, confessed to the details during their statement before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka on Sunday.
The two suspects, who were placed on a two-day remand, revealed the sequence of events during their interrogation.
Based on their confession, police recovered the girl's body fromHatirjheel earlier Sunday.
The victim had been missing since January 16 after leaving her home under the pretext of shopping. When she did not return, her father filed a general diary with Dakshinkhan Police Station on January 19, followed by a formal case on January 27.
Police traced the victim's mobile phone number, leading to the arrest of Robin on January 30. During interrogation, Robin provided information that led to the arrest of Rabbi Mridha. Both suspects were subsequently remanded for two days, during which they confessed to the crime.
According to sources, Robin admitted in court that they lured the girl to a house in Mohakhali on the afternoon of January 16. There, they tied her hands and feet, gagged her, and raped her along with three other accomplices. The victim lost consciousness during the assault and later died. The accused then decided to dispose of the body. They wrapped the body in a sack, transported it via rickshaw toHatirjheel, and dumped it near the Police Plaza bridge in the early hours of January 17.
The recovery of the body and the suspects' confession have sent shockwaves through the community. Police are now working to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices involved in the crime. Further investigations are ongoing.
