BARISHAL, Feb 2: Daily 20 patients died in Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in 2024 while the yearly death toll stood at 7,137.
According to hospital sources, about 4,000 patients are taking treatment at 1,500-bed SBMCH daily.
There are manpower and medical instrument crises in the hospital.
Six district hospitals of 100-bed each have been promoted to 250-bed one with big infrastructure and model tools. Due to lack of necessary manpower and treatment facilities including, doctors, technologists and employees, critical patients are referred to SBMCH from these hospitals. But a major portion of them is dying.
Besides, there are 40 health complexes in 40 upazilas out of total 42 in Barishal Division. But these are worthless having not minimum treatment facilities. After referring to SBMCH from these hospitals, patients die after two-three days.
There were 17 indoors and 17 outdoors in the hospital. But in 2022 on February 3, four more outdoors and three more indoors were included. New outdoors included vascular surgery, cardiology, urology and gastrology, and indoors included neurology, diabetic, and burn.
According to SBMCH sources, in 2024, a total of 14, 57,362 patients took treatment in the hospital including 6,94,536 in the Indoor and 5,58,057 in the Outdoor, and 2,4,769 in the Emergency Department. A total of 7,137 patients in the hospital died.
There are 205 working doctors in the hospital against granted 224.
In 2024, 13,282 patients were undergone major surgery while 20,159 ones were undergone minor surgery.
Dead patients included 721 in January, 619 in February, 116 in March, 568 in April, 584 in May, 524 in June, 514 in July, 545 in August, 558 in October, 645 in November and 673 in December.
Deputy Director of the hospital SM Maniruzzaman said, 205 doctors are hiccupping to provide treatment along with teaching 1,300 students.
Shyamol Krishna Mandal, director of the Divisional Health Department, said, in six districts, there are 382 government hospitals including six general hospitals, 40 upazila hospitals, 70 health sub-centres and 266 union health centres.
Doctor requirement in these hospitals is 1,281, but about half of them are working, he added. Of the remaining half, most of them are on deputation, he added.
Upazila health complexes and union health centres are in worse conditions, he added.
