Young entrepreneur gets success in farming butter fish in Natore

NATORE, Feb 1: Young entrepreneur Imon Hossain has been successful in cultivating butter fish in his pond in Jathian Village in Sadar Upazila of the district.

He used modern technology in his farm. He is sending fishes to neighbouring country after meeting the local demand.
Imon Hossain said, he started his fish farm by opening an agro-fish project, Hossain Agro in Natore one and a half decades back.
His two brothers- Ferdous and Olive joined with him at that time. At first, they began cultivation of various native fish and gradually became gainer.

At one stage, Imon emphasised the importance of the business and imported foreign technology from China in 2015 to expedite the production. Later on, his fish production began to increase.

Imon's brother Olive Hossain said, they became fruitful in cultivating butter fish by using the new technology.
Five metric tons (mt) butter fish and half mt of Bangla fishes were exported to India in 2015. All these had been possible for adopting new technology in cultivation, he added.

He further said, size and health of butter fish are better than before; the weight of ten fishes is one kilogram (kg) whereas it needs 15 fishes to make one kg, earlier; price and demand of the fish are higher in market; customers like big-sized fishes; at present per kg butter fishes is being sold at Tk 400 to 450 in the market.

Other fishes included Ruhi, carp, silver carp, and mrigel in a separate pond of one bigha beside the butter fish pond.
They are expecting Tk 8 lakh earning against their investment of Tk 12 lakh from butter fish.

The Hossain Agro is on 50 acres of land. Besides the fish cultivation the project also cultivates many other agriculture items, such as onion, garlic, mango, jackfruit, and pineapple. Six to ten labourers are working here regularly. Many of them get Tk 12,000 salary per month.

They said, they will continue the butter fish cultivation in order to increase production and export.

Dr Zahangir Feroz, deputy director of the Horticulture Centre-Natore, said, the Hossain Agro has probabilities in cultivating fruits and vegetables besides the fish cultivation. They are always with them, he added.

Md Abul Kalam Azad, district fisheries officer, said, the Hossain Agro achieved success in fish cultivation by using the modern technology.

The function of the project are imitable, and this advancement will continue in future, he added.
