War

Bob Woodward, the legendary investigative journalist, despite his advancing age, has kept up his excellent reporting once again by delivering a bombshell of a book with his latest bomb-drop "War." This extensively researched and fact-checked account comes from a veteran reporter who has famously covered everything from Watergate Scandal, the Vietnam War and 9/11 to the War in Iraq. In more than six hundred pages, Woodward touches upon the most recent front-burner issues of our time and decrypts political decisions that have taken on history-making proportions, ranging from Biden's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan to Putin's biggest invasion of Ukraine.

At the heart of it, this book is a fact factory - a concise look at some of the biggest movers and shakers and their highest-pressure decisions, tabloid-tales and backdoor diplomacies that have reshaped the recent geopolitical landscape. It's the absolute best political book with an inside-the-room reporting style that smoothly combines the best bites and the high-stakes of international war gaming, gray-zone warfare, geopolitical strains, identity politics, powerplays, polarisation, the close calls, the turning points, the plans, and the risks - too many great chapters to count, it's gratifyingly readable, while still peeling back deeper layers!

And for all its centrality to world politics, this book readily shows Woodward's investigative style, as he Sherlocks around in the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon to stitch together firsthand accounts, leaked documents, and his own insightful analysis and finally add up all these ingredients in the mix to assemble one of the biggest bestsellers of this year. He has that kind of focus and maniacal intensity and an extreme sense of news hunting spirit. The book also deep dives into the Trump and the succeeding Biden administration's approach to a wide range of foreign policy challenges, from the rise of China and the war in Syria to the Iran nuclear deal and the North Korean crisis. One of the most striking aspects of War is Woodward's revelatory portrayal of President Donald Trump as a flawed figure. The book highlights Trump's impulsive nature, his tendency to disregard any advice despite having a support system of experts, and his handy habit of taking-up unconventional strategies. Trump's unwillingness to take in expert advice is not a one-off incident but a consistent character trait, including his presidential peculiarities of being hard-mated to the immovable Russian leader Putin and the North Korean dictator Kim JongUn. Flawed as he is, these unpresidential habits have struck deep roots in Trump, and became second nature, especially at a time when he preps for a second term in the White House.

Bob Woodward is the GOAT of investigative journalism with a nose-to-tail expertise on global diplomacy. He is truly the historical custodian of all things music and sonic. Writing a book of such range and research is almost as difficult as splitting the atom. It's like what chess grandmasters do with iconic chess positions. He is our news alchemist. An oracle of wisdom. Bob Woodward did far more than that, applying his ink-stained skills to capture the foibles, memes, hypocrisies and other head-snapping events in the world of politics. So as a big chess move in his long illustrious career, War is an unassailable original, where he brings his A-game. It demands to be read and reread.
