Ahead of Ramadan, the government will begin its Open Market Sale (OMS) of rice across the country at Tk 30 per kg from February 1.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, Food Ministry's Public Relation Officer Imdad Islam confirmed.
He said the government took the decision to ensure rice at an affordable price to low-income people at the upazila level.
He said that 3 tonnes of rice will be sold through OMS outlets per day in each of the 401 upazilas across 61 districts and 1 tonne per day in each of 23 upazilas in three hill districts, covering a total of 424 upazilas through 848 distribution centres.
Besides, under the OMS (general) programme, 1 tonne rice will be sold daily in 906 centres in Dhaka metropolitan area, municipalities in district headquarters, eight cities and four labor-intensive districts - Dhaka, Narayanganj, Narsingdi and Gazipur.
Each buyer would be able to buy five kg of rice at Tk 30 per kgs from the OMS centres.
