Five killed in Shitalakhya boat capsize

The death toll of Shitalakhaya River boat capsize in Kapasia upazila rose to five with the recovery of two more bodies from the river in Gazipur.

Police this noon recovered the bodies including a woman who went missing after a boat capsize in the River on Friday night.

The deceased are Atik, 26, son of Abdul Hye Babul, a resident of Paratala area Tajim Khan, 14, son of Noni Khan, a resident of Madhyanagar, Kohinur Begum, 25, wife of Nur Mohammad, a resident of Alinagar village, M Kaiyum, 17, son of Tara Miah, a resident of Talajhula village, and Anu Miah, 40, son of Hasan Ali, a resident of Lakhpur village in Shibganj upazila of Narsingdi district.

Sub-inspector of Kapasia Police Station Dulal Miah said the Taraganj bound-boat from Shibpur of Narsingdi district sank in the river near Taraganj Bazar due to overloading of passengers.

Most of the passenger, except 10-12, managed to swim ashore.

On information, police rushed to the spot recovered the bodies of Atik, Tajim and Kohinur at night.

Later, a team diver of Tongi and Dhaka fire stations started a rescue operation at about 11.30 am on Saturday.

The team retrieved two more bodies and called off their operation at about 1.30 am, said Akhteruzzaman , assistant deputy director of Gazipur Fire Service.
