SONARGAON, NARAYANGANJ, Jan 27: After being polluted by industrial waste, the water of the Brahmaputra River has been tar.
This harming waste is being dumped by Meghna Economic Zone, Gaston Battery Factory, Choiti Composite, Bengal, Tiger Cement, Fresh and Basundhara Paper Mills and different cement factories.

In different times, Bangladesh Poribesh Rokkha Unnayan Society formed human chain, submitted memorandum and held movement protesting the reckless waste dumping. But these did not work.
According to reliable sources, 33 crore cubic metre waste mixed water of different industries and 270 cubic feet of waste of different factories are being dumped in the 27 kilometre area of Brahmaputra and Marikhali rivers daily. Besides, over 5,000 open latrines are releasing sewage of 885 cubic feet in the river.

A visit found tar-like water in the Brahmapura River in the areas including Mahjompur, Boshirgaon, Charpara, Gobindapur, Horhordi, Muccharchar, Panchamighat, and Alipura.

Farmer Joynal Hossain of Ladhur Char Village at Noagaon Union said, "10-12 years back, the water was not polluted. Dying water is dumped into the river. We can't cultivate IRRI paddy."

Housewife Rabeya Begum of Boshirgaon Village at Jamalpur Union said, "In the rainy season, the river water reaches our home. In the rainy and dry seasons, we go home by wrapping noses."

Mizanur Rahman Rakib of Charpara Village said, "The water of the Brahmaputra has been tar. For using polluted water, our crop production has decreased to 20 mands per bigha from 45 maunds."

Chairman of Poribesh Rokkha Unnayan Society Mohammad Hossain said, "The water of the rivers flowing through Sonargaon zone has been unfit for use. Industry owners are responsible for this. Despite that we are continuing our efforts. Meghna Economic Zone and Choiti Composite are polluting two canals by dumping waste. Besides, about 1,500 dying factories in Araihazar Upazila are dumping coloured water."

Sonargaon Upazila Agriculture Officer Abu Sayed said, excessive acid in the industrial waste is damaging crops; if the usable water is not treated, there will be an agricultural jeopardy.

Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mahmuda Aktar said, fishes are not much available in the river; due to polluted water, egg-carrying fishes are dying; no fish is in the Brahmapura, Marikhali, and Pankhiraj Khal having excessive carbon dioxide and monoxide.

Manager (Administration) of Choiti Composite Md Mizanur Rahman said, "Our ETP is running for 24 hours. We are not dumping polluted water into the river. None can give evidence."

Despite several attempts over mobile phone, Executive Director (Technical) of Meghna Group Kartik Chandra Das was not reached for comments in this regard.

Deputy Director of Environment Department AHM Rashed said, the matter of dumping industrial waste into the river is being monitored regularly.
