Journalist assaulted in city

A journalist was assaulted reportedly by a group of miscreants with sharp weapons at Nawabganj upazila in the capital on Saturday.

The victim is Nazmul Hossain, son of Manik Bepari from Khanepur village under Nayansree union of the upazila. He is a local correspondent of ''Independent Television'' and a news reporter for ''Dainik Amader Somoy''.

The incident occurred at Rahuthati area of the upazila on Saturday night.

According to victim,  Nazmul was on his way home riding on a motorcycle. When he reached near Rahuthati bridge, a group of two masked assailants attacked him with sharp weapons. Somehow, he managed to take shelter at a NGO office, but couldn't avoid sustaining injuries.

NGO officials rescued him and took to Bandura Modern Clinic first, and then to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment, confirmed the NGO’s senior officer Md. Saimon.

Nawabganj Health Complex medical officer Dr. Harogobinda Sarkar said that he has severe injuries in his right hand and leg with a lot of injury marks. He was later referred to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) due to his critical condition. 

Nawabganj Police Station officer-in-charge Mominul Islam confirmed the incident and said that police found his bike from the Ichamati riverside along Deotala Govt Primary School, but his mobile phone hasn’t found yet.

An investigation has been launched in this regard and the legal actions will be taken later, he added.
