A youth has been tortured with his body tied up with an electric pole in front of his mother in Cumilla’s Chauddagram upazila.

The incident came into light after a video clip of the incident went viral on social media on Saturday night.
Victim Imran Hossain’s mother lodged a case with Chauddagram Police Station mentioning the names of Shahidur Reza Raton Miazi and 12 others and five unnamed persons.

The incident took place in front of a mosque at Daulatpur village under Kankapoid union in the upazila.

Imran is son of Shah Alam, a resident of the village.

According to police sources, a gang of ‘criminals’, equipped with arms, led by Shahidur Reza waylaid Imran when he was returning home after withdrawing Tk 50,000 from a bKash shop on Friday night. They then started beating him at gunpoint.

Hearing Imran’s cry for help, his mother, Afroza Begum, went to the spot. The terrorists, at one stage, took his mother hostage at gunpoint. Imran was later tied up with an electric pole in front of the mosque and tortured in medieval style in front of his mother from 6PM to 10PM.

When Imran became unconscious, the gang members fled the scene. Locals rushed him to Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors referred him to Cumilla General Hospital for better treatment.

Chauddagram police station Officer In-Charge Mohammad Helal Uddin said that the criminals involved in the incident went into hiding after a video clip of torturing Imran went viral.

"Police are trying to arrest the accused involved in the incident and legal action would be taken," the OC added.
