Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) have seized a huge consignment of goods which were being smuggled to Myanmar.
A press release signed by BCG East Zone Media officer Lt Shakib Mahmud confirmed the information.
According to the press release, acting on a tip-off, an engine boat from Chattogram on its way to smuggle a huge consignment of grocery goods to Myanmar through the Naf River and Bay of Bengal estuary.
"We conducted a drive at Western area of Shapuree Island around 7 PM on Friday. As the boat crossed the border, the movement of the boat appeared suspicious and a Coast Guard member signalled the boat to stop. Realizing the presence of the law enforcers, the smuggler abended the boat left behind the all goods," reads the press release.
While searching the boat, the team seized 30 sacks potato, 35 sacks onion, 14 sacks garlic, 30 sacks iron nail, 15 box tin nail, 77 pieces tin and 34 kg tea.
Later, it was handed over to Teknaf customs to take legal actions, the press release added.
