A group of miscreants reportedly shot a jewellery trader and looted Tk 4 lakh and over 800gm of gold from Beribadh area of Hazaribagh in Dhaka. A case has been filed over the incident on Friday morning, police said.
Police say a gang of seven to eight robbers on five motorcycles ambushed the trader, shot him in the leg and fled with his bag of gold.
The injured Sajol Rajbangshi, 37, an owner of Iti Jewellers at Ilham Plaza in Kamrangirchar, who lives in Jelepara area of Hazaribagh.
According to the Joy Rajbangshi, younger brother of the victim, Sajol was going home on motorcycle after closing the shop for the night with the money and the gold in a bag.
When he reached the Beribadh Section area, a group of four to five men blocked his way and fired blank shots. Then they shot Sajol in the left leg, snatched his bag and fled. Being informed, they took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at 11:00pm on Thursday and after getting first aid, Sajol was taken to a private hospital for advanced treatment.
Inspector Md Faruk, chief of the DMCH Police Outpost said Sajol brought to DMCH with bullet injury in his leg. He was given first aid and then transferred to another hospital.
Amirul Islam, chief of Kamrangirchar Police Station, said they have investigated the incident and found that three people with three motorcycles had been waiting in the Beribadh Traffic Box area for an hour before Sajol arrived at the spot.
When Sajol reached there, the three motorcycles got ahead of him while four others came up on two motorcycles behind him. They stopped him and looted the money and gold and left the spot.
There were no CCTV cameras at the scene of the incident, he said, adding that they are trying to collect CCTV footage from nearby to identify the culprits.
