Police have arrested 12 people over attempting robbery while impersonating as the members of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).
Police, with help of locals, arrested them at around 12AM on Friday at a flat in the South Khulshi area of Chittagong city.
The arrestees were Md Wazed Rakib, 36, Md Hossain, 40, Md Rokon, 39, Md Osman, 40, Mohiuddin, 45, Abdul Sabur, 37, Md Rubel Hossain, 26, Md Yakub Ali, 39, Mozahar Alam, 55, Md Harun-or-Rashid, 36, Abdul Mannan, 39 and Shawkat Akbar Emon, 31.
According to police sources, a group of 12 individuals came in front of Sanmar Royal Reach building on Khulshi Road No. 3 and told the security guards that they were members of detective agency DGFI.
They broke down the door and entered the flat of Gias Uddin Ansari, former managing director of Jamuna Oil Company Limited, on the eighth floor and started looting. Meanwhile, Gias Uddin was not at home at that time.
Sensing the presence of the robbers, neighbours called the National Emergency Service 999. On information, Khulshi police reached the spot and detained the 12 people, but two of them fled on a microbus.
Police also seized a microbus, a steel peg, three toy pistols, identity cards of intelligence agencies, 25 empty sacks, two ropes and two towels from the possessions of the detainees.
Rais Uddin, deputy commissioner (crime) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, acknowledged that matter said that 12 people were detained in this connection
Among the detainees, some are former expatriates, former bankers, sand suppliers and shop employees.
Legal action has been taken against them, the official added.
