The candidates who are aspiring for the positions of chairman and mayor in municipality, city corporation, union and upazila parishad must have a graduation or equivalent degree.
Uneducated or less educated persons won’t be able to take in an election as a public representative, according to the Local Government Reformation Commission.
Besides, there will be no direct voting for electing chairmen and mayors in local body elections.
Dr Tofayel Ahmed, local government specialist and chief of the reformation commission, said that the commission has taken the decision based on the opinions of stakeholders from different classes, professions and political parties.
After scrutinizing all the facts, the commission will submit its final recommendations to the government at the end of February to ensure that uneducated people won't be public representatives.
Dr Tofayel Ahmed said that educated individuals are discouraged to take part in the local government election due to the influences of different political parties, and their mussel-power in the area and financial influences.
Besides, uneducated people also dominated the locals by their political identities and illegal money.
Therefore, the commission encouraging educated persons to take part in election will be submitted recommendation that the candidates who want to take part in the election must have at least bachelor degree.
