A Bangladeshi farmer was shot by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) near Telkupi border in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district early Saturday.
The injured, Habil, 30, is son of Belal Uddin and a resident of Mollatola village under the upazila.
According to local sources, the incident occurred early in the morning when BSF personnel from Shamsani border area in India’s Malda district fired two to three rounds of bullets. Habil sustained injuries during the shooting.
Medical officials at Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital reported that Habil was brought in at around 7:00 AM in critical condition. He was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Habil’s family members stated that the incident happened while he was working in the field. He was struck by a bullet fired by the BSF.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) informed that Habil, along with 10 to 12 others, had crossed approximately 150 yards into Indian territory under the cover of dense fog. BGB clarified that no authorized farmers were present in their designated area near the Telkupi border during the incident.
Following the shooting, BGB called for a company-level flag meeting with BSF and strongly protested against the actions.
This incident comes after another shooting on January 11, when a Bangladeshi citizen, Shahidul Islam, aged 25, was injured by BSF fire at the Azmat border.
The repeated border shootings have caused fear among residents living near the area. There are increasing demands for enhanced border security and effective measures to address smuggling and prevent such incidents in the future.
