Police have arrested two individuals in Noakhali’s Chatkhil upazila for staging a showdown based on rumors spread through social media about the resignation of Chief Advisor Prof Muhammad Yunus.

The incident occurred at Bansa bazaar in Mohammadpur union of the upazila.
The arrested individuals are Ibrahim Khalil alias Rasel, 42, son of late Ruhul Amin of Jamadar Bari, and Golam Kibria alias Liton, 45, son of late Abdul Malek of Ismail Bepari Bari, both residents of Bansa village in the union. They both were apprehended Friday night at around 8:00 PM at the local bazaar.

Local residents reported that a group of youth activists affiliated with Jubo League staged a showdown on Friday evening after hearing rumors of Dr. Yunus’ resignation. The situation created tension in the area, prompting police intervention. With the help of locals, two individuals were detained and taken to the police station. It was later revealed that Rasel is a member of Mohammadpur Union Jubo League, while Liton is affiliated with local Awami League politics.

Chatkhil Police Station officer-in-charge Firoz Uddin Chowdhury stated that police responded after receiving information about a showdown involving 25-30 activists of the then-ruling party. Following their arrival, two individuals were detained with the help of locals.

A case is being filed in connection with the incident and the two detainees will be formally charged and presented in court on Saturday afternoon, added the OC.
