A worker was killed in a wild elephant attack in Bandarban's Lama upazila early Saturday.
The incident took place at Ishaq Member Para under Sarai union of the upazila.
The dead Md Kalu, 50, son of Akkel Ali, was a resident of Shaplapur union of Maheshkhali upazila of Cox's Bazar district. He worked at a betel nut shop at Ishaq Member Para.
Locals said a herd of wild elephants descended from hills to Ishaq Member Para at around 4 am on Saturday. Later, the elephants entered a farm house in search of paddy rice. Kalu, who was sleeping in the house, was seriously injured in the attack. Later, locals quickly rescued him and admitted to the upazila health complex. The on-duty doctor there declared Kalu dead.
In this regard, Lama Forest Division Officer AKM Ata Elahi said, "We have received information that a worker named Kalu was killed in an elephant attack. The incident will be investigated and the victim will be compensated as per the rules. Due to the food crisis in the hills, elephant herds are raiding the locality.
Lama Police Station Police Officer-in-Charge Shahadat Hossain confirmed it.
