RAJSHAHI, Dec 30: State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda has said substantial and sustainable expansion and promotion of livestock could be the vital means of attaining sustainable development.
He said rearing of cattle, goat and poultry birds can play significant role towards making the grassroots poor people self-reliant. All government and non-government organizations concerned should work together to this end.
He was addressing a discussion on furthermore expansion of livestock at Molladaying area under Paba Upazila of the district yesterday as the chief guest.
Heifer International Bangladesh (HIB) organized the discussion, discussing ways and means on how to make the grassroots people habituated with livestock farming and rearing.
With HIB Country Director Siddiqur Rahman in the chair, Ayen Uddin, MP, Deputy Director of Local Government Dr Dewan Shahriar Firoj, Deputy Director of Department of Fisheries Abdul Wadud, District Livestock Officer Nizamuddin and Professor Dr Jalal Uddin Sarder from Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences also spoke.
State Minister Narayan Chanda said wide-ranging promotion of the livestock sector is very important to remove the existing protein deficiency alongside ensuring food security.
He mentioned protein is the vital nutrition for normal growth and development of brain and other essential nourishments of human body while livestock is the pivotal source of nutrition.
Besides, the unemployment problem in the region especially in its rural areas could be reduced to a greater extent through making the dairy farming popular in the grassroots level.
Socio-economic condition of the region could be elevated through uplifting the sector and the present government is pledged bound to uplift the sector, he added. —BSS
