The Chittagong University (CU) authorities have suspended its 84 students on charges of attacking students and a journalist during the mass uprising last year.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the university's Board of Residence, Health, and Discipline Committee on Monday. However, the matter was disclosed to the media on Thursday.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Md Kamal Uddin said of the 84 students, 73 were suspended for attacking students and 11 were for assaulting a journalist during the student movement in July last year. He also informed that if the further investigation found evidence of serious offence, the students may face expulsion.
Acting Registrar Prof Mohammad Saiful Islam said the official suspension letters were yet to be issued.
Meanwhile, the CU authorities did not disclose the duration of the suspension or the specific departments and academic years of those suspended students. But the students were affiliated with the recently banned Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Allegations were raised against the leaders and activists of BCL for attacking the students, who participated in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, on July 14 night and July 15 afternoon.
Besides, on July 31, BCL men allegedly carried out a bomb attack on a teacher's residence and assaulted on Shah Riyaz, a campus correspondent of Dainik Purbodesh.
