The Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia has announced an extension of the Migrant Repatriation Programme, allowing undocumented Bangladeshi nationals more time to return home under revised terms set by the Malaysian government.
Originally set to conclude on December 31, 2024, the repatriation program has been extended until March 21, 2025, offering additional time for those who had registered with Malaysian immigration but could not return within the original deadline. The extension also applies to migrants from other countries facing similar circumstances.
Previously, undocumented Bangladeshi migrants were required to pay fines based on their duration of stay before availing the repatriation program. However, under new provisions implemented from March 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, irregular migrants were allowed to return by paying a flat fine of 500 Malaysian Ringgit, irrespective of their length of stay.
This initiative reflects Malaysia’s efforts to address undocumented migration issues while providing an opportunity for irregular migrants to regularize their status or return to their home countries under more flexible conditions. The High Commission has urged eligible Bangladeshi nationals to take advantage of the extended deadline and comply with the necessary procedures for a smooth return.
