CLASP, an international NGO based in Washington DC, is supporting Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), to formulate energy saving Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) policies for LED lamps and luminaires. The new policies are predicted to save Bangladeshi consumers $1.8 billion USD and lower CO2 emissions by 22.8 million tons by 2040.
CLASP in collaboration with BSTI organized a technical workshop on "Development of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for LED Lamps and Luminaires" at Westin Dhaka recently, says a press release.
The workshop was attended by Maqsura Noor, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Industries as the Chief Guest and BSTI Director General S M Ferdous Alam, as the special guest. The workshop also invited participating government agencies, private sector and industry, and academia to collaborate on strategies forenergy saving MEPS policy adoption. CLASP Senior Associate, Climate, Asif Hassan, presented on the outcomes of a comprehensive lighting market assessment and provided evidence to support development of MEPS policies, in favor of more energy efficient LEDs."Quality of LED lighting products remains a major concern fand responsible for market distortion in Bangladesh, said Hassan.
