A college girl has passed away during a trip with her friends in Tangail under circumstances her family describes as premeditated.
Her grieving mother, Aleya Begum, accuses her daughter's classmates of orchestrating her death during a trip to Madhupur and demands justice for her loss.
According to Aleya Begum, Athai Moni, an 11th-grade student of Kumudini Government College in Tangail, was persuaded by her classmates to join the trip, during which she was allegedly drugged. Despite being rushed to multiple hospitals, including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka, Athai succumbed to her injuries on January 14.
Reports indicate that Athai, along with several classmates, visited a forest in Madhupur on January 8. Witnesses state that she left the group at one point to ride on a motorcycle with a boy named Jakaria. An accident reportedly occurred, leaving Athai severely injured. She was first taken to a local health complex and later transferred to hospitals in Tangail and Dhaka, where her condition deteriorated.
Adding to the family's anguish are allegations regarding Athai's mobile phone. Her aunt, Rumi Akhter, claims it was kept by a classmate, Oishee, for two days after the incident. Meanwhile, doctors from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University suggested that narcotics might have been involved, further intensifying suspicions.
Madhupur Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Emranul Kabir confirmed that the incident is under investigation, noting that an unidentified individual fled the scene on a motorcycle, leaving Athai behind. Authorities are determined to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.
In response to the tragedy, Kumudini Government College expelled eight students involved in the trip. Principal Md. Khalilur Rahman stated that policies allowing private study outside the campus have since been revoked to prevent such incidents in the future.
Athai's family continues to demand accountability. "They didn't let my daughter become a doctor," Aleya Begum said. "I want those responsible to face justice."
