The general secretary of July Memorial Foundation Sarjis Alam stated that he would participate in the national elections if people wanted him to represent them.

He made the remarks on Friday afternoon while distributing winter clothes to underprivileged individuals at Mokbulur Rahman Government College grounds in Panchagarh.
During the event, Sarjis, also the chief coordinator of National Citizens Committee, highlighted the significance of a formal proclamation recognizing the recent uprising. He mentioned that the Chief Advisor had convened a meeting with representatives from all political parties to discuss the matter, resulting in what he described as a productive discussion.

"We believe the proclamation will soon be presented to the people of Bangladesh. This uprising, led by the anti-discrimination student movement, achieved its goals and the dreams for post-uprising Bangladesh will be outlined in this proclamation," he said.

He emphasized that such a significant uprising, marked by sacrifices and lives lost, should not be limited to the scope of an election. He underscored the need for reforms in the Election Commission, the judiciary and law enforcement agencies before moving forward with a transparent election. "Six months is an unrealistic timeframe for preparing an updated voter list, reorganizing the Election Commission, and restoring the judiciary and law enforcement to their primary duties," Sarjis explained.

He acknowledged that the interim government had suggested holding elections by mid-2026 or a few months earlier, a timeline he deemed reasonable. However, he dismissed the idea of elections by June of this year as impractical, emphasizing that the reforms needed for a fair election require adequate time.

When asked about his potential candidacy in the parliamentary elections, he responded, "Our actions have always been guided by the people's will. If the people of Panchagarh believe that I or any other young leader should represent them in Parliament, I am willing to take on this responsibility. It is a trust given by the people."

At the event, attended by leaders and activists from the BNP and the anti-discrimination student movement, Sarjis distributed winter clothes to approximately 2,000 residents of Panchagarh Municipality.
