RAJSHAHI, Jan 17: Despite bumper onion yielding in Padma chars, growers in Bagha Upazila of the district are not happy because of poor prices.

Per kilogram (kg) onion is being sold at Tk 30-35 at Chakrajapur Bazar.

A grower of Kalidaskhali Char Golam Mostafa said, at present, if the current prices don't increase, it will be difficult to get profits. Their farming costs increased due to increased prices of seeds, fertiliser, and insecticide.

A female labourer of the char Joygon Begum said, most advance growers have got profits. But now it will be difficult to lift costs, she added.

Grower Bablu Dewan of the char said, "I cultivated onion on six bighas. Yielding has been bumper. But cost cannot be lifted at the current price."

There is good demand of onion in markets, but the price is cheaper, he added.

Grower Sujan Ali of Khayerhat area said, "I cultivated onion on four bighas of lease land at Tk 1.3 lakh. It cost more than Tk 1  lakh. But at the current market prices, I will not get profit. I am in tension."

Grower Zakir Hossain of Chandpur Village, Jahangir Hossain, Liton Ali, and Bazlur Rahman of Polashy Fatehpur Village, Pakuria Village's Shafiqul Islam, Sabajul Pramanik, Saiful Islam, Fazlul Haq, and Koligram's Mahidul Islam  said, in the upazila 1,840 hectares of land have been brought under tuber onion; seeds of tuber onion were purchased at higher prices.

Due to natural disaster per bigha, production is 40-60 maunds or market price of Tk 30,000-35,000. Growers count per bigha loss of Tk 40,000-50,000.

Onion seller of Chakrajapur Momin Munsi said, because of onion import from abroad, this full season local growers are depriving of fair prices

On January 2 growers submitted a memorandum to the deputy  commissioner through the upazila nirbahi officer for stopping  onion import from abroad.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Shafiullah Sultan said, onion has been cultivated, everywhere in the upazila; but onion has mainly been cultivated in Padma chars.

Early growers got good prices, he added.
