Five people including a woman were murdered in separate incidents in five districts - Jhenidah, Rangpur, Gazipur, Brahmanbaria and Satkhira.
JHENIDAH: A man was hacked to death by miscreants in Kotchandpur Upazila of the district early Wednesday.
The incident took place in Chandpara Village under Elangi Union of the upazila.
Deceased Kawsar, 50, a resident of that area, was one of the accused in the murder case of Jamaat leader Anamul Master in Kotchandpur.
The deceased's wife Ojola Khatun said that at around 12:30 am, 15 to 20 masked men came to their house and forcibly took her husband away. They then took him to Chandpara Railgate area, and hacked him mercilessly, leaving him critically injured.
Later on, his family members rescued him and took to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Kawsar dead.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotchandpur Police Station (PS) Kabir Hossain Matubbar confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are investigating the matter.
RANGPUR: A man, who was beaten up by his nephews over a longstanding land dispute in Kawnia Upazila of the district on Tuesday night, succumbed to his injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred in Gerdebalapara Chandervita area under Balapara Union of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Amzad Hossain, 55, son of late Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Buddhir Bazaar under Shahidbag Union in the upazila.
Quoting locals and the deceased's family members, Kawnia PS OC Abdul Latif said that the conflict escalated when Amzad's nephew Shahidul and his associates attempted to forcibly excavate land using heavy equipments. The land in question is under a legal dispute, with a case pending in the Land Survey Court.
The confrontation began at around 11:30 pm on Tuesday when Amzad Hossain opposed the excavation. Heated arguments ensued, leading Shahidul and his group to brutally attack Amzad with sticks.
Severely injured Amzad was then rescued and rushed to Kawnia Upazila Health Complex by his relatives and locals. He was, later, transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The deceased's elder son Raihan has filed a murder case with Kawnia PS against 12 individuals and efforts are underway to arrest the accused, the OC added.
BRAHMANBARIA: A young man was beaten to death by his cousin brother following a dispute over gambling money in Kasba Upazila of the district early Wednesday.
The incident occurred in Kheora Village under Mehari Union of the upazila at early hours.
The deceased was identified as Israfil Mia, 18, son of Mintu Mia, a resident of the aforesaid area.
The accused person is Babu Mia, 30, son of Majnu Mia of the same area and cousin brother of the deceased.
According to Israfil's brother Ismail Mia, the two cousins had organized a ring-toss gambling game at a local fair earlier on Tuesday evening.
After losing Tk 1,000, Babu demanded half the amount, Tk 500, from Israfil. When Israfil suggested deducting it from a prior debt, an argument ensued, leading to a physical altercation.
Eventually, Babu became enraged and attacked on Israfil with a blunt weapon late at night, striking him on the head.
Locals then rushed to his aid after hearing the commotion and took injured Israfil to Kasba Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Brahmanbaria General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Israfil's grieving mother Ayesha Begum expressed her anguish, saying, "They took away one of my four sons. I demand justice and the execution of my son's killer."
Kasba PS OC Mohammad Abdul Kader confirmed the incident, adding that a murder case has been filed by the deceased's brother and police are investigating the matter.
GAZIPUR: A readymade garments (RMG) worker was stabbed to death by unidentified miscreants while returning home from work on Tuesday night
The deceased was identified as Saikat, 19, hailed from Haorakhali Village in Sariakandi Upazila of Bogura District. He was a quality inspector at MHEC Apparel Factory in Sreepur Upazila of Gazipur.
Sreepur Model PS OC Joynal Abedin Mondal said that a group of some unidentified miscreants attacked on Saikat with sharp weapons near CRC Textiles in Bhangnahati Village at around 10 pm, and stabbed him mercilessly, leaving the RMG worker critically injured.
Injured Saikat was then rescued by locals and taken to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said the OC.
However, the law enforcers arrested one Mahmud Aminur, 20, as Saikat had a previous enmity with him.
Details would be known after investigation, the OC added.
SATKHIRA: A man strangled his newlywed wife over dowry in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday.
The incident took place in Madhabkati Village of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Khadiza Khatun, 19, wife of Amirul Islam of the village.
It was known that Khadiza got married with Amirul Islam just three months back.
According to police, disputes between the couple had been escalating after Amirul demanded a dowry of Tk 2 lakh from Khadiza's family. When she refused to meet his demand, Amirul reportedly subjected her to both mental and physical abuse.
At around 3 am on Tuesday, an argument erupted between the couple, during which Amirul struck Khadiza on the head with a stick. He then allegedly smothered her face with a pillow, strangling her to death.
Following the incident, local villagers confined Amirul to his house and alerted the law enforcers.
Being informed, police recovered Khadiza's body and arrested Amirul from the scene.
The body of the deceased showed several signs of injury, indicating the severity of the assault before the fatal strangulation, said Satkhira Sadar PS OC Saminul Islam.
However, legal action would be taken in this regard, the OC added.
