
KISHOREGANJ, Jan 15: Former president Abdul Hamid has been named in a case filed over attack and gunfire targeting the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Kishoreganj.
Other than Abdul Hamid, 124 other people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former ministers, have also been named in the case.
Tahmul Islam Mazharul filed the case, according to Abdullah Al Mamun, chief of Kishoreganj Model Police Station, on Wednesday. The 27-year-old plaintiff is the son of Abu Taher Bhuiyan, and a native of Latibabad of North Kishoreganj.
When contacted over the phone, Tahmul a BNP activist said he was injured during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. After receiving treatment for long he has recovered somewhat and filed the case.
Since the fall of the Awami League government, nearly 50 cases have been filed in the district, including 11 cases with Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station, since August 5. In these cases, 4,000 people have been named and more than 10,000 unidentified people have been named as accused. However, this is the first time that former President Abdul Hamid has been named as an accused in a case.
Abdul Hamid has been named as the accused number 3 in the case. Sheikh Hasina has been named as the first accused and Sheikh Rehana is the second accused.
Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun said that legal action would be taken after investigating the case.
In accordance with their order, the suspects carrying shotguns, rifles, pistols, crude bombs and local weapons attacked a procession brought out by students and the public at Station Road in Kishoreganj around 12pm on Aug 4.
Other accused named in the case are Hasina's sister Sheikh Rehana, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq, Awami League leaders Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Hassan Mahmud, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Mohammed Ali Arafat, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Shamim Osman, Kabir Bin Anwar, Tariq Ahmed Siddiq, Nazmul Hasan Papan, and ex-president Hamid's son, Rezwan Ahmed Toufique. Five parliamentarians of the district and Kishoreganj Awami league leaders were also named in the case. Police will investigate the case and take the necessary legal action, said OC Abdullah.
