Women of 11 chars suffer for salty water

CHAR FASSON, BHOLA, Jan 10: Women and teenage girls in coastal chars underChar Fassson Upazila of the district are in health risk due to salty water impact. 

Thousands of women in about 11 chars including Char Fakira, Dhalchar, Mujibnagar Char Leulin, Kukri Mukri, and Char Patila, are suffering different health diseases including skin disease. 

Jamila Khatun, 38, of Dhalchar wh was seen fishing in clayey water in river said, if her husband Hazrart Ali Maji returns with fishes  from sea their familyof six members including three sons and one daughter  can eat food; if not, she manage food by catching fishes in salty water of river and canal. 
  
Her skin has affected by salty water. But she is careless about her health. When asked for treatment she said, "We don't get food even, how to take care of health?"  
   
Anwara Begum, over 60, was repairing her boat on the bank of the Meghna River; it war tar on her hands; her face faded, and skin scars.

When asked she is not taking treatment in hospital she said, "It is not the disease of doctor. It is attack of bad Jin. I went to Kabiraj (ayurvedic practitioner); he gave me Shalsha.

Another Hanufa Begum was seen drying ground nuts on Char Kalamir Maya Bridge. They all are unaware about healthcare. They are blind in ayurveric treatment. 

Char Fasson Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Shovan Kumar Bosak said, sanitary napkin and reproductive healthcare are not easily accessible for women in natural disaster-prone areas; so, they are affected by higher blood pressure, skin disease, and aborting.

Also, the excessive temperature increases the concern of heat stroke of women. 

Women in these localities are becoming victms of asthma and tough breath. Besides, 40 per cent women are suffering reproductive problems, he added. 

He further said, ORS or packed saline is not so effective in southern region.

Former chairman of Dhalchar Union Abdus Salam Hawladar said, water of all coastal rivers and chars including Dhalchar is salty; it has impacted the women health; women of these areas are used to catch fishes and shrimp fingerlings in waist-level water for several hours every day.  
 
Numerous women in chars are unaware of their health. Both women and teenagers are in health risk.

Health experts said, it is the right time for taking initiative about their healthcare.
