Pakistan's premier fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi is set to make his first appearance in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), representing reigning champions Fortune Barishal.
The 11th edition of the BPL begins on Monday (December 30), with Fortune Barishal facing off against newcomers Durbar Rajshahi at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Afridi, a direct signing by the franchise, will be available for the opening five games, having received a no-objection certificate from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) valid until January 15.
Despite being one of the biggest international stars in this year's tournament, Afridi downplayed his own prominence, emphasizing the importance of local Bangladeshi players. "To be honest, Im not a star. The real stars are the Bangladeshi players like Tamim Iqbal and others from the national team," Afridi told reporters on Saturday. "I'm here to perform for the team and help them win matches."
Afridi joins the BPL amidst Pakistan's ongoing Test series in South Africa, from which he has been rested. Speculation in the Pakistani media suggested disciplinary issues, but Afridi refrained from addressing the controversy, instead assuring fans of his fitness and readiness to contribute.
The left-arm pacer credited Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal as a key influence in his decision to participate in the BPL. "Whenever Tamim bhai calls me, I'm ready," Afridi said. "Last year, my international commitments prevented me from playing, but now I have the time. I hope to play good cricket here."
Fortune Barishal aims to retain their title, and Afridi's addition is expected to bolster their campaign as they prepare to launch the tournament in the opening match against Durbar Rajshahi.
