A man was allegedly hacked and beaten to death in a dispute over land in Bohuli bazaar area under Sirajganj Sadar upazila on Thursday night.
The deceased, Abdul Barik, 65, was son of late Abdur Rahman of Bohuli village in the same upazila.
Citing locals and a compaint, Sirajganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Humayun Kabir stated that Barik had been in a prolonged land dispute with a group led by Nur Nabi from the same village. Barik's son, Shafiqul Islam, a joint convener of the local Jubo Dal unit, recently filed a complaint at the police station regarding the matter, which reportedly enraged Nur Nabi and his associates.
On Thursday night, Barik was attacked with sharp weapons and beaten severely at Bohuli Bazar. He was critically injured and taken to Sirajganj General Hospital.
When his condition deteriorated, he was being transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment but succumbed to his injuries en route.
A case was filed at Sirajganj Sadar Police Station later that night and investigations are ongoing, added the OC.
