BNP-backed teachers' group, the "White Panel", has been elected unopposed to the Jagannath University Teachers' Association in this year's elections.

Prof Md Mosharraf Hossain from the Department of Management Studies has been elected president, while Prof Md Rais Uddin, chair of the Department of Islamic Studies, has taken the role of general secretary.

The commission for the JnUTA election said in a press release on Thursday, with no opposing candidates, all positions in the Teachers' Association's executive committee were filled uncontested.

Other elected members include economics Professor Azam Khan as vice-president, history Associate Professor Md Bilal Hossain as joint general secretary, and marketing Professor Imranul Hoque as treasurer.

Prof Rais told bdnews24.com, "We aim to work on issues concerning the welfare of both teachers and students at Jagannath University. We all need to work together for the university's overall development, and we will take it forward with renewed determination."

The pro-Awami League teachers' group, the "Blue Panel", boycotted this year's election, claiming they were subjected to pressure and threats over the submission of nomination forms.

The total voter turnout was 658, but due to the uncontested nature of the election, no votes were required.    —bdnews24.com
