Malta farmers fetch profit from high yield

DUMURIA, KHULNA, Dec 13:  Delicious malta fruits of Dumuria are being marketed to different districts of the country.

Commercial farming of malta is increasing day by day in Dumuria Upazila as growers get profitable sales of the fruit.

Recent visits to different areas in the upazila found huge yielding of malta in orchards. While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, a number of malta growers said, they are being benefitted by cultivating malta commercially.

Hugely yielded malta plants were seen nosing down to carry loads of fruits.

At present, wholesale traders are coming from far areas to purchase malta from growers. Per kilogram malta is being sold at Tk 100.

Traders are purchasing per maund at Tk 3,000.  Such trading scene was seen in Thukra Village at Raghunathpur Union. A grower of the village Selim said, he cultivated malta according to the advice of the upazila agriculture office on 20 decimals of land in 2000; in the last year, he sold malta of Tk 50,000. 
 
G M Amanullah, a grower and former union chairman, said, their malta sale has been started. There is huge demand of malta in markets, he added.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Insad Ibne Amin said, soil of this upazila is suitable for malta cultivation. With assistance of the upazila agriculture office, the malta farming is increasing day by day, he added.

After meeting the local demand, malta fruits are also being sent to other districts of the country, he maintained. 
 
He further said, in the upazila, a total of 25 hectares of land have been brought under the malta cultivation; and this season, a malta grower, Kumaresh Mandal has cultivated malta on 100 decimal lands in Kalikapur Dutta Danga area at Sarafpur Union.
