RAJSHAHI, Dec 13: Along with date juice collection, trading of date molasses (Patali Gur) has begun in the district with the early winter felt.

According to field sources, the date juice collection started in Rajshahi in the running dry season.

At present, both juice collection and molasses making are going on in the district's Bagha, Charghat, and Puthia upazilas; yet marketing of molasses is taking place in a limited scale as it is not the full winter.

The winter is felt at night and in the morning in Rajshahi; along with this, shrouds of dew are thinly visible in the nature.

With the sun rising, localities turn vibrant with busyness in juice processing and molasses making and marketing. Extractors come out to lift juice pitchers who said, at present juice is dropping slowly, and it will increase with intensity of the winter.

Demands of both juice and molasses will go up along with increasing trends of the winter, they added.

Traders said, date molasses of Bagha-Charghat-Puthia is demanded across the country. Now, per kilogram (kg) Patali molasses is selling at Tk 220-230.

Yet, the price of date molasses is comparatively higher at Sahebbazar. A customer Shahed Alam said, he purchased one kg Nolen or Lali Gur (molasses) at Tk 260.

Wholesaler Dilip Kumar at Baneshwar Bazar in Puthia said, "After making molasses and Patali molasses, local farmers come to Baneshwar Haat for sales. Some of them sell their items themselves while others sell to us."

"We give commission at Tk 5-10 rate of our purchased date molasses. This time per kg is selling at Tk 200-230."

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is providing all necessary advices about juice collection and molasses making.

DAE's Deputy Director Sabina Begum said, surrounding areas need to be kept clean during molasses making. We are advising for not applying any type of chemical."

Date trees are across 543 hectares of land in Rajshahi, with a molasses production target of 8,891 tonnes.
