People of the country's northern part including the districts of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Kurigram, especially those residing in the Brahmaputra, Teesta, Dudhkumar, Gangadhar and Dharla River basins, are suffering as dense fog and chilly winds continue to sweep over the regions.
The country's lowest temperature of 10.2°C (degrees Celsius) was recorded in Chuadanga and Gopalganj at 9:00am on Thursday. Besides, 14.8°C was recorded in Dhaka at 6:00am on the day.
A mild cold wave has started in Chuadanga. Therefore, the severity of winter has increased. The sun is hiding during the day and the cold wind is blowing with thick fog at night.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Thursday predicted that a mild cold wave may sweep over the north-western and western parts of the country from Saturday and may continue for two days.
BMD meteorologist Shahana Sultana told media that mild cold waves may sweep over places in different parts of the country from December 14 to December 16 and the temperature may rise after that.
According to the regular bulletin of BMD, moderate to thick fog may occur at places over northern and north-eastern parts of the country and light to moderate fog may occur at places elsewhere over the country from midnight till morning.
During this time, the weather may remain dry with a temporary partly cloudy sky over the country.
According to the BMD, temperatures between 8°C and 10°C is considered a mild cold wave, 6°C to 8°C a moderate cold wave, and less than 6°C a severe cold wave.
Night and day temperatures may fall slightly over the country.
Chuadanga First Class Meteorological Observatory Senior Observer Rakibul Hasan said that the lowest temperature recorded in the district was 10.2°C. The humidity of the air was 97 per cent. This is also the lowest temperature in the country Thursday, jointly with Gopalganj.
He also said that the cold may increase further due to dense fog. The mercury may also drop further in the next few days.

Badsha Miah, a 45-year rickshaw-van puller of Nilphamari's Dimla, told this correspondent that he is unable to go out for work due to the cold. Same time, light wind increased the coldness further.
"Most of the elderly people and children have been facing massive problems due to the cold wave as the people in the area have not seen the sunlight in last few days," he added.
