Five people were killed and at least eight others injured in separate road accidents in two districts - Kurigram and Brahmanbaria, on Wednesday.
BHURUNGAMARI, KURIGRAM: A woman and her daughter were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and an auto-rickshaw in Bhurungamari Upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The accident took place at Ghunti Ghar near Sonahat Land Port of the upazila in the afternoon. The deceased were identified as Momena Begum, 45, wife of Mohammad Ali, and her daughter Mst Munni, 22, residents of Mahiganj Village under the upazila.
The injured persons are: Momena Begum's husband Mohammad Ali, auto-rickshaw driver Raju Mia, 18, and passenger Mohar Ali, 50.
It was known that Mohammad Ali was going to Bhurungamari Hospital along with his daughter Munni and wife Momena Begum riding on an auto-rickshaw for the treatment of Momena. On the way, a truck coming from the opposite direction collided with their auto-rickshaw at Ghunti Ghar near Sonahat Land Port in the afternoon. Munni died on the spot and four others were injured at that time.
Locals then rescued and took them to Bhurungamari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor referred Momena to Rangpur for better treatment.
Later on, Momena Begum succumbed to her injuries on the way to Rangpur.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhurungamari Police Station (PS) Monirul Islam confirmed the incident.
BIJOYNAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA: Three people including a minor girl were killed and five others injured in a three-way collision involving a drum truck, pickup van and microbus in Bijoynagar Upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The accident occurred at Birpasha on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under the upazila in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Raisa, an 11-month-old daughter of Manik Mia of Madhabpur Upazila in Habiganj; Fazilatunnesa, 75, of Dantamandal Village under Nasirnagar Upazila in Brahmanbaria; and Pavel, 30, son of Lokman Mia of Haripur Village of the same upazila.
Quoting locals, Khatihata Highway PS OC Margub Touhid said that a Cumilla-bound drum truck collided head-on with a microbus coming from the opposite direction in Birpasha area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. Meanwhile, a Sylhet-bound pickup van hit the drum truck at a reckless speed. Three people were killed and five others injured at that time.
Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The drum truck, pickup van and microbus involved in the accident have been taken to the PS, the OC added.
