Myanmar conflict disrupts Teknaf-Saint Martin's waterway

The Teknaf-Saint Martin's waterway has been closed to all passenger ferries, speedboats, and fishing vessels, due to escalating conflict in Myanmar, as announced by local authorities.

The restriction was officially implemented on Wednesday by the Teknaf Upazila administration, following public announcements made via loudspeakers.
Residents of Saint Martin Island have expressed deep concern over the impact of the suspension on their access to food and essential supplies. As the island is entirely dependent on Teknaf for goods transported via this waterway, the disruption has created an alarming situation.

Abdur Rashid, President of the Teknaf-Saint Martin's Boat Owners Association, stated that the closure was instructed by the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO). "This is peak of tourism season. Around 2,000 tourists visit the island daily, alongside the 10,000 residents who rely on this route for food and essentials. Without immediate resolution, the island will face a severe food crisis," Rashid said.

Abdul Malek, a resident of the island, emphasized the growing scarcity of supplies. "The disruption has left us on the brink of a food shortage. We urge the authorities to establish alternative transport routes to ensure the flow of essential goods," he appealed.

Abdu Rahim Jihadi, President of the Saint Martin Hotel and Guesthouse Association, echoed these concerns. "Saint Martin's Island depends entirely on Teknaf for food supplies. With over 10,000 residents and 2,000 tourists visiting daily, the current situation demands swift intervention from the authorities."

The Teknaf UNO, Sheikh Ehsan Uddin, explained that the conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine region, now under Arakan Army control, has heightened security risks in the border area, necessitating the suspension of all waterway operations.

However, he assured that plans are underway to facilitate alternative transportation for food and essential goods.

As the standoff persists, residents and stakeholders continue to call for an urgent resolution to prevent a worsening humanitarian and economic crisis on the island.
