Police have arrested five people for their alleged involvement over attacking a microbus carrying eight student leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement in Sonargaon, Narayanganj on Sunday night.

He said that police arrested Mobarak, a known robber with at least eight robbery and snatching cases against him.

During preliminary interrogation, Mobarak confessed to the law enforcers that they thought the microbus was carrying expatriates and attacked it for robbery.

They stole a mobile phone and snatched Tk 2,500 from the driver and fled the scene. Mobarak, however, claimed to journalists on Narayanganj court premises that they attacked the vehicle for robbery but has no intention to attack student leaders’.

Mobarak sold the stolen phone to Billal Hossain, who then sold it to a mobile phone shop dealing in stolen devices.

According to the given information of Billal, police arrested Anwar, Rakim and Mintu and recovered the 148 stolen phones from their possessions.

The OC said no case was filed by the victims. So, police registered a case of robbery on Wednesday and the arrested individuals were sent to jail through the court.

Earlier, central leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were en route to Lama, Bandarban, for organizational activities. On December 8, they came under attack by the miscreants.
